We spent Christmas in Broken Bow Oklahoma, which is a tiny rural community in south east Oklahoma. My parents own a cabin, and when we come up we usually come to go waterskiing. In the winter, we spend a lot of time four wheeling, chopping wood and playing games as a family. This year there were 13 people in a 1300 square foot house. Although there was a line for the showers and the baby naps were interrupted far too often it was a great time.
We did have an experience this trip that shops how back woodsy this place is. Let me set the scene. Andrea and I stopped for dinner at Pizza Hut our first day here. A woman and a man with a group of 8 year old girls came in. During the meal, the lady asked the girls what they asked Santa for this Christmas. The answers were as follows:
- Outdoor reindeer (Dear Hunting Target)
.22 gauge shotgun
Riding Lawnmower
John Deer Cat Fishing Pole
These were 8 years old girls! No one asked for a doll, a pony, or a new dress. They wanted hunting and fishing gear. No joke.
Next, the group moved to the temporary tattoo machine. The man bought tattoos and distributed one to each girl. They then stood by the bathrooms and he proceeded to help the girls put the tattoos on. The girls were so excited to show their tattoos off to the other kids. When it was the ladies turn to put tattoo on, she proceeded to lift up her shirt, shimmy down her jeans and place the tattoo on her hip. After all the tattoos were attached, the lady and the girls discussed all the tattoos that their parents had and where they were located. When the woman told the girls that she didn’t have one, the girls were shocked. What adult doesn’t have multiple tattoos?!
Once we got out of the hillbilly town and on to our own property the rest of the trip was very fun. Here are some photos from our trip so far.
